Design without limits – Denic Cabinets sets a new standard for bespoke interiors

by Media Xpose

Denic Cabinets is redefining bespoke interiors with clean lines, functional design and local flair – led by Dipuo Phakathi, a visionary entrepreneur turning frustration into opportunity and cabinetry into craft.

In a market often dominated by mass production, Denic Cabinets is proving that tailored design and local craftsmanship still have a vital place in modern interiors. Led by entrepreneur Dipuo Phakathi, the Gauteng-based business brings a deeply personal touch to custom cabinetry – combining clean lines, practical design and a bold vision for African-made excellence.

The business began in 2016, born from Phakathi’s frustration while renovating her own home. “I was disappointed by how little effort suppliers made to understand my needs,” she recalls. “Everyone had ready-made options but no interest in personalisation. So I decided to create a solution myself.”

She teamed up with a local carpenter – now the company’s factory manager – and set out to build a brand focused on authenticity, function and refined aesthetics. Today, Denic Cabinets is recognised for its distinctive approach: offering made-to-measure cabinetry for homes, offices and retail spaces, shaped by a philosophy of collaboration and care.

Design that works as hard as it looks

What sets Denic Cabinets apart is its commitment to listening. “Each project starts with a detailed consultation,” says Phakathi. “We want to know how our clients live, work or present their brand. That shapes everything – from layout to finishes.”

Her engineering background ensures that every design is backed by technical precision. The result is cabinetry that looks sharp, functions beautifully and lasts. The company’s rise includes major milestones – from high-profile client work to becoming the first Black woman-owned brand to exhibit in the Kitchens & Bathrooms category at Decorex Africa.

Global opportunities rooted in local strength

Earlier this year, Denic Cabinets was selected to represent South Africa at INDEX Saudi Arabia – a significant step onto the international stage. For Phakathi and her team, the selection was a moment of recognition and possibility.

“Being part of the SAFI delegation is a real honour,” she says. “It shows that African design is gaining traction globally and that there is a space for our stories, our aesthetics and our craftsmanship in the world market.”

That support has come through the South African Furniture Initiative (SAFI), which has worked to position businesses like Denic Cabinets for global visibility. “From the BRICS exhibition to export readiness programmes, SAFI has helped open doors I would have struggled to reach on my own,” says Phakathi.

Backing talent, unlocking growth

SAFI CEO Greg Boulle sees Denic Cabinets as a symbol of where the industry is heading. “Dipuo is part of a new generation of manufacturers who bring business acumen, creativity and courage,” he says. “She’s showing that South African furniture can lead – both locally and internationally.”

Founded in 2016, SAFI exists to grow a sustainable and competitive industry through training, market access and strategic support. “We want to see locally made furniture in homes, schools and workplaces across Africa, and the world,” says Boulle. “That begins with supporting businesses like Denic Cabinets and doing whatever we can to help them thrive.”

Investing in the future

Denic Cabinets has recently opened a new showroom in Pretoria and invested in high-precision equipment like CNC routers and automatic presses. These additions help improve sustainability, accuracy and turnaround times – key to scaling the business both locally and abroad.

“We use sustainable timber and top-grade fittings, but we also think about how our processes impact the environment,” says Phakathi. “Growth for us means building smarter – not just bigger.”

A message to other makers

To small manufacturers looking to grow, Phakathi’s advice is simple: “Start small but think big. Use what’s in your hands, and don’t wait for the perfect moment. Institutions like SAFI are here to support you – and that support makes all the difference.”

As the spotlight shifts towards South African creativity, Denic Cabinets is a shining example of what’s possible when purpose meets skill – and when local design is given the space to lead.
