Crafting a future: how RA Woodcraft is carving out global success

by Media Xpose

RA Woodcraft, a proud member of the South African Furniture Initiative (SAFI), is blending traditional craftsmanship with modern innovation, expanding into global markets and nurturing the next generation of skilled artisans while championing sustainability.

The South African Furniture Initiative (SAFI) is committed to fostering a thriving local furniture industry by supporting its members in their growth, sustainability efforts and market expansion. Among its members is RA Woodcraft, a South African company that exemplifies the dedication to craftsmanship, skills development and sustainable business practices that define South Africa’s furniture sector.

Founded by SA Skills Gold Medallist and World Skills Finalist in Joinery and Wood machining, Rudolf Zuidema, RA Woodcraft seamlessly blends traditional woodworking expertise with modern precision to produce high-quality furniture and joinery for both local and international markets. “At RA Woodcraft, we believe craftsmanship isn’t just about making furniture – it’s about preserving a legacy of skill and sharing it with the world,” says Rudolf Zuidema.

Greg Boulle, CEO of SAFI, notes that RA Woodcraft is a prime example of the innovation and dedication we see among its members: “Their commitment to quality, sustainability and artisan development aligns with SAFI’s mission to strengthen the local furniture industry and promote global competitiveness.”

South African craftsmanship on the global stage

RA Woodcraft has built a strong reputation among architects, interior designers and discerning clients for its bespoke joinery, built-in cabinetry and precision wood machining services. Their dedication to sustainability is reflected in their use of responsibly sourced materials and eco-friendly finishes.

Recognising the increasing global demand for handcrafted wooden products, RA Woodcraft has taken a significant step toward export expansion by shipping samples to Australia. Their first Australian client discovered them via a Google search, reinforcing the potential for South African manufacturers to attract international business. “We’re excited about this opportunity, and once our client officially launches her business, we hope this will become a regular export channel for us,” says Jana Zuidema.

Greg believes that South African furniture makers have the skills and expertise to compete on the world stage: “RA Woodcraft’s success proves that with the right support and exposure our industry can make a meaningful impact beyond our borders.”

A passion for skills development

Beyond their business achievements, Rudolf and Jana Zuidema, who co-direct RA Woodcraft, are deeply committed to nurturing the next generation of artisans. South Africa faces a shortage of skilled joiners and wood machinists, making training and mentorship essential for the industry’s future.

RA Woodcraft has partnered with Sihlalo, a skills development programme that empowers women through woodworking. While Sihlalo recently gained accreditation as an official training centre, their small workshop limited practical training opportunities. By opening the doors of their fully operational joinery facility, RA Woodcraft provides trainees with access to advanced tools, real-world production environments and hands-on experience. “It’s about more than just technical skills,” says Rudolf. “We want artisans to understand production management, business operations and the realities of working in the industry. It’s about building careers not just skills.”

Commitment to sustainable practices

RA Woodcraft integrates sustainability into every facet of its operations. The company collaborates with environmentally responsible partners such as OSMO from Germany and BLUM from Austria to ensure that their furniture not only meets high-quality standards but is also produced with minimal environmental impact.

“We believe sustainability goes beyond materials. It’s about designing furniture that lasts, reducing waste and ensuring our products contribute positively to the environment. Sustainability is about more than materials – it’s about building furniture that lasts a lifetime, reducing waste and ensuring our products don’t end up in landfills,” says Jana.

As part of their sustainability efforts, RA Woodcraft donates solid wood sawdust to a local mushroom grower and supports Greenpop, a non-profit organisation focused on reforestation.

Industry collaboration and future growth

As a SAFI member, RA Woodcraft benefits from the initiative’s commitment to industry development, market expansion and policy advocacy. SAFI provides a collaborative platform for local manufacturers to access trade opportunities, industry insights and resources that drive sustainable growth. “It’s one thing to create high-quality furniture, but knowing how to navigate global markets is just as important,” says Jana Zuidema.

“At SAFI, we recognise that craftsmanship alone is not enough – businesses need the knowledge and networks to scale effectively,” notes Greg. “RA Woodcraft exemplifies the kind of forward-thinking innovative approach that strengthens the South African furniture industry.”

RA Woodcraft’s success story highlights the strength of South African craftsmanship and the importance of skills development and sustainability in driving industry growth. By mentoring artisans and producing world-class furniture, Rudolf and Jana are not just creating furniture – they are shaping a legacy.
