Where Are They Now? Amy & Joshua on Life After My Design Rules

by Kim K

When Team Air was announced as the winners of My Design Rules Season 1, their reaction said everything. Joshua Joubert stood in disbelief, struggling to absorb the news. Beside him, Amy Moses smiled quietly — the kind of smile that comes when months of pressure, sleepless nights, and self-doubt finally pay off.

“It was an underdog story,” Joshua recalls with a grin. “We were at the bottom of the line, unsure if we’d even make it through. When they announced Team Air, I couldn’t believe my ears.”

Amy remembers it as a moment of reflection as much as victory.

“It was amazing,” she says. “I learned so much from the process. Afterwards, the pace slowed down, which was its own challenge, but it also gave me space to settle back into life.”

Taking the Leap

For Joshua, the win was a turning point — the nudge he needed to take a leap of faith. Within months, he had registered his own business.

“I’d been in pause mode for a long time, wondering if I should start a business or not. MDR gave me the confidence to just do it,” he says.

Amy’s journey took another form. For her, the win became a badge of credibility.

“It’s funny,” she says, laughing. “Friends and family suddenly had a little more belief in me. I could hand over my business card with confidence, and I started getting word-of-mouth referrals. That meant a lot.”

Lessons in Design — and in Life

Both winners agree the show was about far more than design. It was a crash course in resilience, planning, and trusting the process.

“With everything going wrong and emotions running high, what helped us was sticking to an overall plan,” Amy explains. “We set it at the beginning, and no matter what happened, we stuck to it. That kept us grounded.”

Joshua nods.

“There were moments when I wanted to give up. Everyone has those thoughts. But I told myself — trust your journey. That’s what kept me going.”

A Platform That Matters

Looking back, both believe My Design Rules was more than just television — it was a career catalyst.

“It’s a good way to test the waters,” Amy says. “It’s very intense, but it stimulates something within you.”

“It shows young people that creativity has value,” adds Joshua. “But the opportunity is only the start. It’s what you do with it that counts.”

Looking Ahead

Today, Amy continues to grow her design career through word-of-mouth projects and community referrals. Joshua is focused on Cadock, his new interior architecture practice, and is determined to make his mark in the industry.

Both remain grateful for the opportunity, but neither defines themselves by it.

“Winning was amazing,” says Amy. “But the real win is how you carry it forward.”

Joshua agrees: “It’s not just about what happens on the show — it’s about believing in your journey, long after the cameras stop rolling.”
