Somerset Mall is moving into a new growth phase as construction continues behind the scenes. Shoppers still enjoy full access to entrances, parking and stores while the development team works on the mall’s most considerable upgrade in recent years.
Phase one of the expansion opens on 20 November 2025 and adds more than 5 000 m² of new retail space. The mall will introduce 26 new stores, strengthening its position as the region’s leading retail and lifestyle destination.
Big Retail Arrivals for South Africa and the Western Cape
The expansion brings a potent mix of first-to-market brands. Safari Collection will debut in South Africa, while Napapijri launches its first Western Cape store.
The project also brings the Helderberg’s first Skechers, Anta, Lego, Bella Luna, New Balance, Burnt, Curve Gear, Nicci Boutique and JD Sports stores. Local brands such as Bootleggers, Colourbox, Old School and Safari Collection join established international names, highlighting a balanced retail mix.

Investment, Jobs and Long-Term Value
Hyprop Investments’ commitment shows in the scale of the upgrade. More than 1 200 jobs were created during construction, covering contractors, subcontractors and consultants. Once the new stores open, at least 400 long-term jobs will follow.
General Manager Nicholas Oliphant says the expansion supports the area’s growth. “We see this as a chance to support local economic development. Job creation and commercial inclusion guide the project.”
A Better Shopping Experience With No Disruption
All construction work sits behind the building, allowing shoppers and tenants to trade as usual. Foot traffic and tenant turnover remain steady throughout the build.
Upgrades inside the existing mall include new floor tiling and refurbished bathrooms with green technology features such as waterless urinals and Propel-Air toilets. A Rubicon Supercharger Charge Station and a new car wash are also now open.
What Comes Next
Phase two launches in July 2026 with Freedom Interactive Park. This new entertainment space will combine technology and social connection in a high-traffic area.
Portfolio Executive Wayne Abegglen says the focus is on future relevance. “We are improving the experience and widening the offering. The design choices we make now must still feel right in a decade.”
Somerset Mall’s expansion shows a clear shift. The mall is growing with purpose, supporting the local economy while building a more refined retail experience for years to come.
