Engen brings solar power to Wentworth Secondary

by Kim K

Wentworth Secondary School now has reliable renewable energy thanks to Engen’s national solar programme, which continues to expand across South Africa.

The school received a new 15kW portable solar container with battery backup. The system delivers uninterrupted power during outages, cuts electricity costs, reduces pressure on the grid, and lowers carbon emissions.

“Education is the cornerstone of progress. By supporting academic resources and sustainable infrastructure, we aim to empower the next generation to thrive in a technology-driven world,” says Olwethu Mdabula, Engen CSI Manager.

Part of a growing national rollout

The Wentworth installation follows recent solar projects at Hillview High School and Ganges Secondary School, both of which host Engen Maths and Science School (EMSS) classes. Engen plans to install renewable systems at all ten EMSS centres across the country.

“Investments like this inspire learners to engage with and support sustainable environments in their communities,” says Simlindele Manqina, Engen Transformation and Stakeholder Engagement Manager.

Supporting STEM and sustainability

Earlier this month, Marikana North High School in the North West region received the same 15kW system through a partnership between Engen and Tharisa Mines. The rollout is led by Engen Business & Energy Solutions (EBES).

“These portable solar containers are compact, scalable, and efficient. The battery backup keeps power running at all times,” says Kevin Singh, Head of EBES.

Engen’s solar programme strengthens its commitment to sustainability and STEM education. By lighting up schools, the company supports learning, innovation, and a greener future for South Africa.
